| Here are some common beliefs, many of which have been debunked over 10 years ago through scientific study that are still commonly believed today: |
| 1. Spot Reducing Fat: This is a myth. You cannot take off fat from one particular area of your body. Imagine a tennis player, who hits the ball with his/her racket with one hand and arm, not the other. They may have additional muscle in their “swinging arm” but not less fat. Fat is stored everywhere, and it’s taken off everywhere when we burn more calories than we take in. |
2. Strength training gives women big muscles:
No! Muscles increase in diameter in response to resistance training. When you lift sufficient weight, each muscle fiber responsible for that movement when it contracts actually tears. The repair of the muscle fiber, called protein synthesis, results in a larger diameter. Therefore, weight training increases the diameter of each muscle fiber. Guess what? The person with more muscle fibers has larger muscles than a person with fewer muscle fibers. Due to genetics, females typically (though not always) have fewer muscle fibers then their male counterparts. Therefore, a female almost never has the muscle size and mass of a man (and men with slighter body builds have fewer muscle fibers than men with larger skeletal systems). Therefore, ladies, it is a myth that you will become “too muscular” due to weight training. |
3. Slow boring cardio is the best way to burn fat:
False. Many people think that they have to do dreaded, boring, pain staking slow cardio that everyone hates. The truth is it doesn’t help burn fat and with the demoralizing thought of a boring workout, it can actually lead to you quitting your training program. You have to keep things interesting! |
4. Doing cardio alone to burn fat is by far the best exercise:
False. Doing only cardio to burn fat is a big mistake many people make. What you are actually doing is slowing down your metabolism, which means you are burning less calories. It can also cause the loss of muscle mass. Muscle mass is critical to maintaining your metabolism and burning fat away forever. |
